WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WE
posted on November 14 2011 by George Adams from Emergency Management
November 13th-19th is Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana. With that Switzerland County Emergency Management would like to take the opportunity to provide citizens with several safety reminders for the upcoming winter weather.
The National Weather Service and virtually every other weather service around is forecasting below average temperatures and above average snowfall for Indiana this winter.
**First and foremost it is essential for every family and individual to have an emergency kit and to have an emergency plan in place for any situation mother nature may present this winter and year round. It is recommended that everyone have enough supplies in their emergency kit to last 72 hours. That includes food, water, medicines, warm clothes and blankets, flashlights, first aid kits, and a battery powered radio, as well as the other items listed in the Emergency Kit attachment is available at http://www.in.gov/dhs/3311.htm
**Residents should also use caution with home heating methods such as kerosene, space heaters, and propane. Assure you have adequate ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide build up as well. Keep flammable items away from heaters of all types.
**Residents should be familiar with Travel Advisories within Indiana and Switzerland County and their meanings.
If officials feel a local travel advisory is warranted, the travel advisory shall fall under one of the 3 categories. These categories are similar to what the National Weather Service uses for severe weather.
ADVISORY - The lowest level of a local travel advisory, means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas.
WATCH - Means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a “watch” local travel advisory only essential travel, such as too and from work or in emergency situations is recommended and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.
WARNING - The highest level of a local travel advisory, means that travel is restricted to emergency workers only. Individuals should refrain from all travel unless extreme emergency, comply with necessary emergency measures, cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency plans, and obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers. Further restrictions may be included.
For current information on Travel Advisories in Switzerland County visit http://www.in.gov/ai/appfiles/dhs-countyMap/dhsCountyMap.html.
Residents on the roadways during winter weather are reminded to slow down and allow extra distances between them and the car in front of them and if travel is not necessary during times of bad weather it is best to stay off the roadways.
